When do I submit my proof of residency?

A proof of residency is required for a family to accept a student’s seat. The proof of residency must be received by Excel Academy’s Enrollment office by the latest by the 15th calendar day from the time the offer was made.

What can I submit as proof of residency?

Proof of residency is determined by a family’s ability to provide ONE document (i.e. lease, utility bill, driver’s license) that includes the name and address of the child’s parent/guardian. Here is a detailed list of acceptable proofs of residency:

  • Rhode Island Driver’s License or State ID
  • Utility Bill (gas, electric, water bill only) dated within the past 60 days
  • Deed, Mortgage Payment dated within the past 60 days, or Property Tax Bill dated within the last year
  • Current Lease, Section 8 Agreement, or Landlord Affidavit
  • Bank Statement or a paystub dated within 60 days
  • A W2 form dated within the year or a Payroll Stub dated within the past 60 days
  • If you do not have any of the above, a notarized letter confirming:
    • Residency of the parent/guardian,
    • Relationship between the leaseholder and the parent/guardian/caregiver, AND
    • Student you are completing an application for resides there

Important Notice about Residency & Continued Enrollment at XLRI

Students attending Excel Academy Rhode Island must live in the approved catchment area for Excel Academy which includes the town/city limits of Providence, North Providence, and Central Falls. with the exception of children of Excel Academy staff who can reside in any district in Rhode Island.

  • If a student moves out of the approved catchment area during the school year, the student may remain enrolled at Excel Academy through the end of the reporting period (e.g. trimester). If a student moves out of the approved catchment area of Excel over the summer break, they are disenrolled.
  • It is the responsibility of the family to notify Excel Academy Rhode Island of the change of address immediately.

Per R.I. Gen. Laws § 16-64-1 – A child shall be deemed to be a resident of the city or town where his or her parents reside. If the child’s parents reside in different cities or towns the child shall be deemed to be a resident of the city or town in which the parent having actual custody of the child resides. In cases where a child has no living parents, has been abandoned by his or her parents, or when parents are unable to care for their child on account of parental illness or family break-up, the child shall be deemed to be a resident of the city or town where the child lives with his or her legal guardian, natural guardian, or other person acting in loco parentis to the child. Where a child is a resident in a dwelling which lies in more than one municipality, the parent(s) or guardian shall choose which school district the child shall attend without payment of costs as tuition.

If the parents equally share custody then the student’s residency will be determined by where the student lies their head the majority of nights during the week (Monday – Friday).
