Last week, Ms. Ovalles took the lead on collaborating with our middle school to take eighth-graders on a field trip to Regis College with the opportunity to stay the night at the school!

The purpose of this overnight field trip is to have students imagine themselves as college-goers. It is a rite of passage for our eighth graders!

Thank you to Ms. Ovalles, our middle school teachers, faculty and staff, and @regis_ma who made this all possible. We tip our CAPS to you!

We are starting our week back with a shout out to our Postsecondary Counselors who received the Shapple (shout out apple) in our last CAPS department meeting!

As our seniors enter their last week of high school, our Postsecondary Counselors have been working with them during Quarter 4 to help them navigate their next steps for life after high school. Our College and Career Counselors and Postsecondary Counselors have been collaborating with each other to make sure our seniors have the most support possible as they will soon become Excel alumni!

We tip our CAPS to our Postsecondary team who have gone above and beyond in serving our students to begin this new chapter in life! 🎉🧢

Nicole Repp, one of our College and Career Counsel

Nicole Repp, one of our College and Career Counselors, and Erin McElligott, Dean of College and School Counseling at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School, partnered together to present at the NEACAC Annual Meeting Conference this past Wednesday!

Their presentation, “College Counseling and Data Tracking Best Practices for FGLI (first generation, low-income) Student Populations” focused on how data collection has supported college counselors in helping students as they navigate through complex financial backgrounds, as well as how college counselors can encourage students to persist in school due to data sharing details about a story that may not be captured otherwise.

It’s always wonderful collaborating and sharing insight with other charter schools in the area, and Mrs. Repp thoroughly enjoyed presenting with Erin! We tip our CAPS to all the college and school counselors who continuously provide support for students to help them reach success.

This past Friday, Excel juniors and seniors went on a field trip, led by Ms. Mullis, to the Kaplan Lab at Tufts University where they learned how to make brain tissue engineering models to study Alzheimer’s and TBI. The event was led by Dr. Adam Mullis and Marley Coe! Thank you to everyone who joined and participated, we tip our CAPS to our future STEM leaders! 🧢

Mrs. Repp is one of our beloved College and Career Counselors and has worked at Excel for a number of years. She brings expertise, positivity, and motivation into our office each and everyday, always finding new opportunities to make the best out of every interaction with everyone she meets. We are so lucky to work with her!

Alyika is joining the team as Associate Director of Post Secondary Support. Prior to her Role at Excel, she worked at Boston University and many other higher education institutions. Alyika is most excited to help guide students in meeting their Post Secondary goals!

Ms. Flinn is our Senior Director of Postsecondary Support and has been a driving force in bringing resources, insight, ideas, and a wealth of knowledge to our CAPS team, our students, and everyone who collaborates with her!

Recently, the Postsecondary team took over the 12th Grade Level Seminar classes for our soon-to-be graduating seniors, and our Postsecondary team has worked incredibly hard to offer their supports to our seniors during this transition. We are so grateful for Ms. Flinn’s leadership and all that she brings to our team!

Today we celebrated Mrs. Goldworm’s birthday! Mrs. Goldworm is the Dean of our CAPS office, and she goes above and beyond in supporting the members of our CAPS team, students, along with so many others in our Excel community. She has been a part of the Excel community for several years, working hard to make sure that every student has access to college, careers, and other postsecondary opportunities, along with bringing opportunities to those who work with her at Excel.

We are so grateful to have Mrs. Goldworm as our fearless leader of the CAPS office- we tip our CAPS to you! 🧢 Happy birthday! 🎉

Celebrating Women’s History Month:

Last week, Ms. Ovalles received the CAPS Shapple (Shout Out Apple)! Ms. Ovalles spearheaded the Summer Opportunities fairs last week for both the middle school and high school. This brought together over 50 families at the middle school fair, and 35 job and program partners at the high school fair!

Ms. Ovalles also works with the middle school, as well as all 9th and 10th graders to expose students to different college and career program opportunities. We appreciate all you do!
